Mysterious happenings

Dear Abdomen:

Could you please pick one size and stay it throughout the day? It's very hard when I get dressed and have one waist measurement and then blow up like a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon by mid-afternoon and have to unbutton and unzip my pants when seated because my waist is many inches larger and I fear that I will cut off circulation to my lower half.

I know mysterious happenings are afoot, but it's a little disconcerting when I go from looking not-so-pregnant to looking like I could give birth any moment all in the course of a few hours. It's also hard to keep things a secret at the office if I am so round.

Also, could you please tell me what is actually in there? I know it can't actually be all fetus-related, because last we looked it was only the size of a lime and every afternoon you are the size of a ripe honeydew melon. Is it air? Water? The concentrated hopes of a 40-year-old woman who is praying every day for things to go well with her first pregnancy after 2 years of trying? As this is a question that the Boy has asked I'd really like to know too, because the "I'm just getting fat" answer is starting to give me a complex.

Thanks much for your help.

  1. This happens to me too - I look much bigger as the day wears on. I think it is gas mostly. Or fluid retention, because I drink more during the day. Get a belly band, it will make your regular pants more comfy - you could even put it on in the afternoons only.

And you are entering the "beer-gut" phase, where you don't look pregnant, just fat. It's a lovely stage. :)

  2. I am so with you here! I only wear my stretchy waist skirts because of this, and actually broke down & bought a pair of maternity pants. They are so much more comfortable & dont remind me of how fat I am looking. I feel much better...

  4. I dunno what it is, but I have the same mysterious happenings. It's a magic trick, methinks In the morning when I wake up, my bebe has disappeared, but by the time I get home from work, it's back again. :)

I finally broke down last week and purchased real, bonafide maternity pants. I have been surviving comfortably with my belly band for the last 20 weeks, but no more.

  5. Since my ass grew, too (mysteriously, since I have still not gained ONE POUND), none of my old pants even remotely fit. I can't even get any of them past my thighs, I swear to you. I have been wearing my new maternity pants every day, and sometimes some drawstrings. They accommodate any size belly. And, yes, it fluctuates madly. You should have seen me last night after 2 huge bowls of soup and a tall glass of water!

I find that if I lie flat on my back, I can actually feel with my hand the part that is uterus. It is hard and round and low-down, and it's size/position is not much of the whole belly!!!!

  6. Haha, me too! I mean, at this point I'm just enormous all the time, but in earlier pregnancy I would be all cute and little in the morning and a Thanksgiving Day parade float by the end! I think it was gravity and fluids and food. But it was astounding.

  7. Wow, I want to see some data on this. Like maybe you could measure in the morning and evening? I like to think it's all the hope--that seems like a nice cushion for baby.
